You’ve done the work, prepared your case, and now you’re ready to ask your boss for a raise and/or a promotion.
*Gone with your bad self*
Want to up your odds of a yes? Here’s the perfect time to ask:
Before your year-end/performance evaluation.
Don’t wait until your performance evaluation to ask for a raise or promotion because by then, you’re too late. You’ve got to make your case BEFORE the decision gets made in order to influence the decision. Besides that, your boss may not be the ultimate decision maker so there will be time needed for consideration, a decision, and approval. Trust me, the time to talk to your boss is NOW.
Give your boss the heads up beforehand so he/she is prepared for the conversation and isn’t caught off guard. You can say something like, “I’d like to talk about my performance and my compensation before my year-end appraisal, should I send you a meeting invite?”
I’m slipping on my hiring manager hat here…in many organizations, giving someone a raise or promotion involves multiple steps and people which is why you’ve got to have a strong case with concrete examples, start the conversations early, and not be discouraged if it takes multiple conversations.
To asking now,
Ashley
