I’m hearing a lot of “I want to be in a new job before the year is over,” lately. Makes sense, considering stores are putting out Halloween stuff, reminding us that 2019 is on the downward spiral.
*Great*
Planning to be in a new role by year-end? Do this:
1. Don’t rule out an internal move especially if you like the company or you’ve got other perks you don’t want to lose. Skip the internal postings and start talking to people, getting an idea of what teams do what, and where your talents might shine.
Get out of your comfort zone and your head about why you can’t do this, who you don’t know, and why it won’t work. If you’re planning on leaving anyway, what do you have to lose *|FNAME| *?
2. Whether your move is internal or external, social season (school events, football tailgates, conferences, holiday gatherings) is fast approaching. Think about how you can slide the fact that you’re looking for new opportunities into these conversations.
*Pro Tip* Asking someone to “let you know if they hear of any openings,” is 100% the wrong way to do this because it’s vague and it puts all of the work on the other person, kind of like when you run into an old friend and say “we need to get together.” The moment you walk away, you forget.
Instead, be specific in your ask e.g., “I’m looking for a senior-level Operations role. Is it ok if I reach out if find something I’m interested in at your company?” or “Would you introduce me to the Ops manager where you work? Great, let’s exchange contact info.”
See the difference?
*Pro Tip* Make sure your resume and LinkedIn are updated in case someone asks you to connect or shoot them an email.
